Chapter 47 Hitting People
Chapter 47 Hitting People
Gu Jia's dessert shop needs a lot of capital, so before asking Xu Huanshan for help, she needs to go to the fireworks company to check on its financial situation. That's when she meets Wang Manni at the company.
Wang Manni has been living a relatively peaceful life lately. Although she has moved to the outer ring road, her salary is not as high as when she was a saleswoman, and her work is quite tiring, although... but at least it's stable, and every day feels like yesterday!
Wang Manni disliked this job. She'd been a sales clerk for a long time and gotten used to the freedom, but her career path had been blocked by someone's scheme. Wang Manni had no choice but to adjust her work attitude. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and exhaled…
Suddenly a voice rang in my ear, "Hey? Aren't you the sales manager from Misia?"
Wang Manni quickly stood up. "Hello, I... I used to be." Wang Manni had no memory of Gu Jia.
Gu Jia continued, "Then how did you get here?"
Wang Manni remained embarrassed, saying, "I resigned because I want to change my work environment."
"Okay, sit down and do a good job!"
"Yes, I will."
Gu Jia continued walking into the inner room and found Xu Sheng. Gu Jia first asked who had recruited Wang Manni. Xu Sheng hesitated for three seconds and then confessed that it was Xu Huanshan's final interview, which took place shortly after Li Ke was fired.
Gu Jia remained outwardly calm, but inwardly she was sneering. Xu Huanshan's behavior was utterly childish!
There were legitimate reasons for firing Li Ke before, and Wang Manni doesn't have any work problems now. Gu Jia thought about it and could only hold back for the time being and see how things went.
Wang Manni and Li Ke are indeed different. Wang Manni wants to be a wealthy man's wife and have a marriage based on "love," at least that's what she thinks for now. Li Ke, on the other hand, only wants to climb the social ladder; she's straightforward and doesn't care much.
Gu Jia didn't dwell on the minor issues, but instead asked Xu Sheng about the fireworks company's financial situation. She learned that the company was facing financial difficulties and would have to wait until next month when a final payment was received before they could have some funds available for use.
Gu Jia understood the situation and knew that even if she asked Xu Huanshan for money, he wouldn't be able to come up with much.
Back home, Gu Jia had no choice but to call and withdraw the money she had invested in the insurance company, so she could use it to open a dessert shop.
As for Wang Manni, Gu Jia felt she still needed to find a way to get her out of the fireworks company, but she had to be gentle and not let Xu Huanshan feel hurt anymore. Her gaze swept over the design plans for the dessert shop, and Gu Jia suddenly had an idea.
Zhong Xiaoqin, however, encountered some difficulties; she experienced some spotting when she woke up that morning. Chen Yu didn't dare to delay and took both pregnant women to the hospital. Wang Wenwen, who needed to register for prenatal care, also came along.
Zhong Xiaoqin's test results came back; the fetus was relatively normal, but Zhong Xiaoqin's constitution was weak, requiring treatment to maintain the pregnancy. Although the doctor didn't explicitly say so, Chen Yu understood the general meaning: the problem wasn't serious, it was quite common, and easily treated. Perhaps because Zhong Xiaoqin wasn't as busy at the property management company, it didn't lead to any more serious consequences.
Wang Wenwen's checkup went smoothly, and no problems were found with the fetus. Zhong Xiaoqin was very envious and resolved to start exercising after giving birth. Even if she couldn't match Chen Yu, she couldn't be worse than Wang Wenwen. Zhong Xiaoqin didn't remember that she was always full of fighting spirit when she made such a resolution.
The three of them had barely settled into their seats after returning home from the hospital when Chen Yu received a call from Gu Jia, "Teacher Chen, can you do me a favor?"
"What is it?"
Gu Jia's tone was a little anxious, "When Huanshan was playing football with others, he got into a fight with some students. He's in the police station now, and the other party won't agree to a settlement. They just want Huanshan detained."
Chen Yu recalled a scene from the show where Chen Xu threatened to keep a record of the student's file. When he watched the show, he thought Chen Xu was very smart, knew how to be flexible and handle problems and shift the blame.
After explaining the situation to the two pregnant women, she left. Although Xu Huanshan and Chen Yu knew each other, they weren't really close. Gu Jia rarely let Xu Huanshan attend women's gatherings, and Chen Yu also rarely attended, but Gu Jia and Chen Yu were friends, having known each other since the grand event. Because Gu Jia had very little experience with fighting, she didn't handle it as effectively as Chen Xu, instead trying to bribe him. But how could a hot-headed young man in his early twenties endure such humiliation? Especially with so many classmates watching! So, the situation became one where Gu Jia was helpless. The only one who could help was Professor Chen Yu; perhaps the student could reconcile out of respect for the professor.
After Chen Yu arrived, he first met up with Gu Jia to find out what had happened. Xu Huanshan had attacked first, and he himself admitted it. Although the other party attacked later, it would still be classified as mutual fighting, since it clearly did not meet the criteria for legitimate self-defense.
Chen Yu walked over to the student group, squatted down, and looked at the students whose faces were bruised and swollen. "Which school are you from? I am Chen Yu, an associate professor at Shanghai University of Technology."
The students looked at each other, but none of them dared to say a word.
Seeing this, Chen Yu didn't press the issue. "It's okay if you don't want to talk about it. I just want to talk to your counselor and resolve this privately. It's best not to report it to the school. I know it's not easy for you to come to Shanghai to study. You've fought your way across the narrow bridge for twelve years, and it would be too much of a waste for you to get a demerit from the school for a fight. Don't you think so?"
One of the students in the lead seemed a little incredulous, "Is it really that serious?"
"If you don't believe me, you can check it yourself, or ask your counselor."
A few students, who were "know-it-alls" and knew a little about everything, started whispering and analyzing the situation. In the end, the leader spoke up, "We just can't swallow this! That man was too arrogant, and that woman too, just because she has a little money, does that make her so great?"
Ultimately, Gu Jia and her husband failed to understand the psychology of these kids. They were at an age where they cared a lot about their image, and they felt cool just like gangsters. They would feel ashamed to sell themselves for money.
"You've misunderstood them. That guy's name is Xu Huanshan, and he likes playing soccer just like you. He's only been earning money for the last three or four years. At your age, his family is just an ordinary family. Back then, they got into fights all the time, but you know how boys are, they often become friends after fighting. Because they fought so much, his family would often pay compensation to the ones who got beaten up, it certainly wasn't to humiliate you. How about this, I'll have them get each of you a membership card as an apology, so you can go to the field to play soccer whenever you want, how about that?"
When Gu Jia waited in the car for Xu Huanshan to come out, she witnessed a rather surreal scene. The two groups who had previously refused to reconcile after the fight were now acting like brothers, one saying I was wrong, the other saying I was bad—a childish yet standard conversation like that of elementary school students. Gu Jia quickly rolled up the car window, afraid of being recognized.
Chen Yu followed at the back, and only after everyone had left did he exchange a few words with Xu Huanshan, saying, "I'm sorry, Teacher Chen, I've caused you trouble."
Chen Yu waved his hand. "It's nothing. I heard you're going to Beijing, is that right?"
"Yes, we went to Beijing to inspect the site of the amusement park."
Chen Yu earnestly warned Xu Huanshan, "The outside world is not like home. You must be careful when you go out. Sometimes it's immoral to step on flowers and plants!"
Xu Huanshan, of course, didn't understand. He recognized each word individually, but when put together, he was completely baffled. However, he didn't dare to ask too many questions, lest he appear illiterate.
