Chapter 248 The End
Chapter 248 The End
Oh my, there is an unexpected gain?
Howard raised his eyebrows: "Go on."
"A few days ago, I requested anti-psychic bullets from the Military Affairs Department, but they told me they were all used up. This is unusual." The nun's eyebrows slowly knitted together, "Because I am very sure that there are enough anti-psychic bullets in the armory."
"How did you know there were anti-psychic bullets in the armory? As far as I know, this thing is a rare commodity." Howard asked.
"Two Terran moons ago, a transport ship was attacked by Orks while docking in the harbor. I participated in the operation to recapture the transport ship. The ship was severely damaged, so our commander ordered us to retrieve the important supplies on board and then blow up the ship." The sister said, "And the order we received included an unusual number of anti-psychic weapons."
"Since then, we've been preparing for the full-scale offensive. To conserve our strength, we intentionally reduced conflicts with the orcs during that period. Therefore, it's impossible for anti-psychic weapons of that scale to be consumed in such a short time." The nun began to ponder. "So I started investigating this matter. I checked the import and export records of the airport, as well as the inventory of the armory. In the end, I found that there was a huge shortage not only of anti-psychic weapons, but also of conventional weapons, heavy weapons, vehicle fuel, and various supplies."
"You have the authority to check this?!" Howard was surprised. This level of data should not be something that a small combat nun could check casually. Although Howard also knew that Gloria held a certain position among the combat nuns and was not the lowest-level combat nun, but to be able to check these things, her power was too great.
"I can't, but the planet's governor, now the supreme commander, can. I used a little threat to gain his authority," the nun replied. "I reported the results of my investigation, but have received no response yet."
"Common sense suggests these items were likely embezzled by someone," Howard continued. "But that's definitely not the truth you believe. I also think this matter can't be analyzed with common sense, so just state your conclusion."
"These weapons disappeared in sets. For every rifle missing from the inventory, two ammunition belts are missing. So, it's more likely that these weapons were used to arm an unknown unit. The total number of these weapons could arm an entire battalion, equipping every soldier with the most powerful weapon. And if nothing unexpected happens, they took away almost all the anti-psychic weaponry. After receiving the order for the general attack, I also received a troop deployment map, but I didn't find this mysterious unit." The nun paused for a moment, then continued, "It would be reckless and foolish to launch an attack without waiting for the Space Marines. Even if that unit and the corresponding firepower were deployed, it might not change anything... but it would at least increase our chances of victory..."
"So the more you think about it, the more it seems wrong, right? The sudden advance of the general attack for no apparent reason, the disappearance of a huge number of weapons, and..." The nun glanced at Howard and May, then skipped over some of the conversation and continued, "Before, I just thought they were going to compete with the Space Marines for military merit, but now it seems that's not the case."
"If this is true, I don't know how I should react. Should I be thankful that the leader of this planet isn't a good-for-nothing? Or should I be angry that they sent us here to die just to fulfill their unknown purpose..."
"I never expected that..." Howard couldn't help but clap his hands after hearing this. "I thought your brain was all muscle, but I didn't expect you to be able to think so much."
"We can't think about these things when we're on the battlefield," the nun said, surprisingly not getting angry at Howard's criticism. "Once we take up arms, the only choice left is to be brave."
Oh, so now your muscles have cooled down and your brain has calmed down too, right?
Howard thought so in his heart, but did not say it out loud. As far as the current situation is concerned, the fact that the nun was willing to say this was already a great progress. If he continued to make sarcastic remarks, he would be ungrateful.
"It's okay. I understand. You've accomplished this already, and it's already remarkable." After praising the nun a few times, Howard summarized the conversation. "So, right now, what we need to do is rescue your teammates and her people. Then, she's looking for something here, and you need to figure out what the governor of this planet is up to, right?"
Neither May nor the nun objected.
"So, we need to communicate. Communication is good. More than half of the world's problems can be solved through reasonable communication. Even for the remaining small number, we need to communicate first to confirm the enemy and friend before we draw our swords," Howard said. "At least we're not enemies at this stage. And if you ever decide to swing your swords at me or at each other, please let me know beforehand and don't just start fighting without saying a word, okay?"
Mei: "I have always done this and will always do so."
The nun expressed her agreement with silence.
"Can you please give me a clear answer instead of such an ambiguous attitude?" Howard recalled the incident where the nun agreed before the negotiation but changed her mind halfway through, so he decided to be more cautious.
"I swear in the name of the Emperor of God that I will keep the promise I made to you at this moment. I agree to your request." The nun obviously understood Howard's concerns, so she swore directly.
Howard finally felt reassured. He knew these soldiers, educated and trained by the Empire, too well. Their values placed personal honor above their own lives. Most considered dying on the battlefield far more honorable than living to a peaceful retirement. Furthermore, the interests of the Empire were more important than their own honor. If they could dirty their hands and use despicable means to bring victory to the Empire, they would do so without hesitation. And the Emperor's honor was paramount. Therefore, when a loyalist soldier swore an oath in the Emperor's name, it signified their highest sincerity. Unless they were subsequently deceived or misled, they would uphold this oath sworn in the name of the God-Emperor, even at the cost of their lives.
The child is teachable. The child is teachable.
Howard nodded repeatedly, feeling very satisfied. To be honest, when the nun turned hostile earlier, he had almost given up on this crazy woman, but he never expected that he could save her in the end.
"Then please, ladies." Howard bowed slightly and made an inviting gesture, indicating that the conversation was over and it was time to move on.
