Chapter 116: Rushing to the Midui Glacier

Chapter 116: Rushing to the Midui Glacier

At dawn, a pale golden light filtered through the thin clouds, shimmering over the dreamlike land of Bomi, like a veil draped over it, awakening the slumbering mountains, rivers, and streets. Li Fugui and Xiao Taojie rose early to clean their RV, which shimmered softly in the morning light, echoing their inner joy. Inside, Zhang Tingjian was already dressed, fingering the Buddhist beads he always carried with him, his eyes filled with anticipation. For him, this trip to the Midui Glacier was a reverent encounter with the sacredness of nature, and the wisdom and composure imbued by the years lent a solemnity to this anticipation. Zhang Nan, humming a light tune, packed his camera equipment, his lenses and tripod neatly arranged in his bag, intent on capturing the glacier's magnificent spectacle.

Not far away, Zhang Bei's pickup truck had also started up, the roar of its engine shattering the morning silence. Xiao Xing, like a nimble fawn, bounded open the car door, clutching her puppy, A-Bao, who barked twice, cheering on the journey. Xiao Xing's cheeks were flushed, her hair a bit disheveled by the wind, but that couldn't hide the fiery glint in her eyes. She'd been daydreaming about the Midui Glacier all night, and now it was practically overflowing. "Zhang Bei, we have to hurry! I can't wait to see if the glacier looks like the crystal castle in a fairy tale!" Zhang Bei smiled and nodded, pressing the accelerator. The pickup truck took the lead, followed closely by the RV, as they wound their way along the mountain road towards the Midui Glacier.

The Midui Glacier is located in Bomi County, Tibet, and is a typical representative of the marine glaciers in southeastern Tibet.

Its formation is closely related to geological and climatic factors. In high mountain regions, large amounts of snow accumulate gradually under the force of gravity. This abundant snowfall provides the material foundation for the formation of glaciers. Over time, the pressure of the upper snow layer gradually compacts the lower layer, forming granular snow. Further pressure and slow recrystallization of the granular snow transform it into denser glacial ice.

From a climatic perspective, the area where the Midui Glacier is located is influenced by warm and humid air currents from the Indian Ocean, resulting in abundant rainfall. This ensures that the glacier continuously receives sufficient snow supply to maintain its growth and development.

The high mountains and deep valleys provide an ideal environment for the accumulation and flow of glaciers. Under the influence of its own gravity, the glacier ice slowly moves down the valley, forming the spectacular glacier tongues we see today. The low altitude of the Midui Glacier's glacier tongue allows it to extend into the forested area, creating a unique and beautiful interplay of glaciers, forests, lakes, and other landscapes. This landscape is extremely rare in the world, bearing witness to the magnificent process of natural forces shaping the landscape.

Along the way, the scenery unfolded like a picturesque scene. Outside the car window, the mountains rolled up and down, like a giant dragon sleeping on the earth. Clouds and mist lingered on the mountainside, wisps like the sleeves of immortals. On the hillside, colorful prayer flags fluttered, conveying the unique Tibetan prayer language. Every flutter seemed to tell the bond between ancient beliefs and this landscape. Xiao Xing pointed out the window excitedly, sharing her amazement with Zhang Bei. A Bao also stood up, nose pressed to the glass, curiously looking in. In the RV, Li Fugui was driving, and Xiao Taojie was sitting in the passenger seat. From time to time, she looked back and chatted with Zhang Tingjian and Zhang Nan about family matters and the wonders of glaciers she had heard of in the past. Laughter and joy echoed in the car, warming the journey to this wonderful sight.

As we approached Midui Glacier, the chill deepened, the air permeated with a piercing chill. We disembarked and set off on foot, following a path crisscrossed by a mix of creaking gravel and snow. In the distance, Midui Glacier resembled a majestic beast descended from the sky, or a dazzling treasure left to the world by a deity. Its winding glacier tongues, shimmering in the sunlight, shone a dreamy blue, a pure, deep blue that seemed to hold secrets from the very beginning of the universe. The textures carved into the ice, like natural reliefs, told the story of millions of years of wind and snow, while the cracks etched the surface like lines of poetry written by time.

Located in Yupu Township, Bomi County, Nyingchi City, Tibet, Midui Glacier lies at the junction of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains and the Boshula Range. It is one of Tibet's most important marine glaciers. The following is a brief introduction to its historical background:

The glaciers develop at their source in snow-capped mountains at an altitude of approximately 6000 meters. Atop these mountains are two enormous, chair-shaped ice basins, their formation closely tied to the geological structure and climatic conditions of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains and the Boshula Range. This region encompasses a series of southeast-trending high mountains. The southwest monsoon from the Indian Ocean flows northward along the Yarlung Zangbo River and the Zayu River Valley, bringing abundant rainfall and providing the material foundation for glacial growth. In this low-temperature environment, the snow accumulates and compacts, gradually forming glaciers.

Late in the night of July 15, 1988, the Midui Glacier suddenly leaped. The end of the massive glacier broke off and rushed into the glacial lake, causing a surge of water equal in volume to the glacial lake itself. The lake dam burst, and within minutes, thousands of cubic meters of water, mixed with debris, tumbled down, destroying 18 bridges and 42 kilometers of roadbed on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. This severed southeastern Tibet's only "lifeline" for six months.

In October 2005, the Midui Glacier was selected as one of China's six most beautiful glaciers in the "Most Beautiful Places in China" competition, hosted by National Geographic China and co-organized by 34 media outlets nationwide. Since then, its popularity has continued to grow, attracting a large number of tourists. In 2005, after the village road in Midui Village, Yupu Township, Bomi County, was repaired, villagers began offering horseback riding services to tourists. In 2008, the initial stages of the "horse caravan" service were established in Midui Village. In 2020, the village established the Tibet Bomi County Meichuan Tourism and Culture Co., Ltd., standardizing the operation of the "horse caravan" service. The village also jointly invested with the scenic area to purchase tourist buses, providing sightseeing bus services, cultural performances, and rental of local specialty stalls, boosting the local tourism economy.

As a typical modern monsoon temperate glacier, Midui Glacier boasts a wide range of features. Its massive ice basins, frequent avalanches, steep and massive icefalls, ice surface structures upstream of the ablation zone, and the coexistence of glacial lakes, farmland, and villages at its terminus provide a valuable natural specimen for studying glacier formation, evolution, motion, and the impact of climate change on glaciers, making it of great scientific value.

Xiao Xing pulled Zhang Bei, eagerly rushing to the foot of the glacier. A Bao ran ahead happily, his footprints like melodious musical notes on the snow. Xiao Xing reached out to touch the ice wall and gasped. The biting cold made her feel the glacier's vitality. "Zhang Bei, this is amazing, it's like touching time!" Zhang Bei smiled and wrapped his scarf around her, his eyes fixed on the magnificent scene before him. Elsewhere, Zhang Tingjian stood still, eyes closed, palms clasped together, muttering something in the most traditional and solemn way to pay respect to nature's gift. Zhang Nan set up his camera, the shutter clicking continuously, capturing the glacier's charm from every angle. Each photo was a heartfelt confession of this stunning beauty.

Li Fugui and Xiao Tao strolled through the landscape, watching the youthful energy blend with the tranquility of the glacier. They exchanged a smile, a tangible embodiment of the peacefulness of time. They found a flat patch of snow, spread out their picnic mats, laid out steaming butter tea and tsampa, and invited everyone to gather. Under the glacier's protection, everyone sipped the warm tea and munched on tsampa, their laughter and chatter forming a wondrous harmony with the glacial tranquility. This trip to Midui Glacier, amidst the magnificent scenery, had forged precious friendships and unforgettable memories. As the sun dipped, its afterglow gilding the glacier, they set off on their return journey, filled with nostalgia.
