Crossing the famine to find the white moonlight

Chapter 236 Emotional Struggle

Chapter 236 Emotional Struggle

That night, despite the mission's successful completion and the team's preparations for rest, Ye Wan's emotions lingered. She walked to the edge of camp, quietly gazing out at the dark valley in the distance, her thoughts like fluttering leaves, tossed and turned by the wind. She knew she wasn't exhausted by the mission's end, but by Xie Linchuan's momentary protection. That tacit understanding, their hearts entwined, had taken root in her heart. However, she feared the unforeseen consequences of this emotion.

"Ye Wan, are you feeling unwell?" Suddenly, a deep voice came from behind her, breaking her thoughts. She turned around and saw Xie Linchuan standing there, with a subtle hint of worry and hesitation in his eyes.

Ye Wan's heartbeat faltered, and her already complex thoughts became even more tangled. She forced a smile, "It's okay, I'm just a little tired."

Xie Linchuan approached and stood beside her gently. He did not ask her if she was really okay, but just stood there silently, his eyes fixed on her, as if trying to read something from her expression.

Ye Wan turned and looked out into the darkness, taking a deep breath. "Linchuan, we've come this far. The team is gradually stabilizing, and everyone's trust and reliance on us is growing deeper. Now is the most critical moment, and we can't let any unstable factors affect our progress."

Xie Linchuan frowned slightly, as if he understood the meaning of her words. He did not answer immediately, but looked up at the stars in the sky, his eyes becoming complicated for a moment.

"Yes, I understand. We all understand the weight of responsibility and cannot easily let personal feelings affect the future of the entire team." He finally spoke, his voice low and firm, "But, Ye Wan, I cannot ignore how important you are to me. No matter what, I hope to provide you with a stable future."

These words pierced Ye Wan's heart like a sharp blade. She froze, a warmth spreading through her. Xie Linchuan's eyes held a deep sense of helplessness and determination, and every word he spoke was like a hook, deeply entangling her heart. She understood that the "stability" he spoke of wasn't just a promise for the future; it was also an expression of his deep affection for her.

However, Ye Wan's heart wasn't so receptive. She clenched her hands tightly, the pressure from her fingertips almost painful. She took a deep breath, trying to calm the turmoil within her. She knew she couldn't let the emotions of the moment cloud her mind. The team's future, everyone's survival, weighed heavily on her shoulders. She couldn't let any personal feelings affect the team's fate.

"Linchuan, we have too many responsibilities," she said slowly, her tone steady but carrying an unconcealable heaviness. "You and I both know that every step we take now will impact the future. We must make our decisions calmly and rationally. If our relationship becomes complicated, it could upset the current balance and even bring unnecessary risks to the team."

Xie Linchuan's expression changed slightly. He looked at Ye Wan, his eyes flickering with struggle and conflict. "I know you have a stronger sense of responsibility than anyone else. You always put the team first, even before your own feelings," he whispered, a hint of bitterness in his tone. "But, Ye Wan, I can't deny that being with you is my greatest desire in this life."

Ye Wan's heart trembled, and her eyes became moist, but she fought hard to hold back the tears. She looked at Xie Linchuan and tried to answer calmly, "I know my feelings for you aren't just a momentary impulse. I've been thinking about our relationship for a while now. However, I can't let my feelings become an unbearable burden."

Xie Linchuan lowered his head, seemingly pondering Ye Wan's words. His brows furrowed tightly, as if he didn't fully understand her feelings. He whispered somewhat unwillingly, "Are you unwilling to accept our relationship because you're afraid our relationship will affect the entire team?"

Ye Wan was silent for a moment, then nodded slightly, "Yes. If we put personal feelings first, the stability of the team will be threatened. Our feelings must be allowed to exist only at an appropriate time. Otherwise, any decision may bring unnecessary risks." Her voice was low and firm, as if telling Xie Linchuan that this was not just her personal choice, but her responsibility to the entire team.

A complex wave of emotions welled up in Xie Linchuan's heart. He understood every word Ye Wan said, understood her sense of responsibility, and knew why she was so cautious. However, an uncontrollable emotion still surged in his heart. He couldn't ignore Ye Wan's importance to him.

"Ye Wan, I know you're doing this for everyone's good." Xie Linchuan's voice became a little hoarse. "I understand your rationality, but I also hope you can understand that my feelings for you are so sincere. I don't ask you to make a decision now, I just hope you know that no matter what, I will stand by you, support you, and help you."

Ye Wan's eyes moistened slightly, and she shook her head gently: "Linchuan, our relationship cannot be simply dominated by emotions. Our current mission cannot be distracted by any possibility."

Xie Linchuan looked at her closely, his eyes deep, and whispered, "I understand. Our responsibilities now are heavier than ever, but please remember, I will always be by your side."

Ye Wan gently closed her eyes, feeling both warmth and heaviness in her heart. She knew Xie Linchuan's persistence wasn't a fleeting impulse, but a genuine feeling. Yet, she couldn't let go of her responsibility to the team and the uncertainty of the future. She could only silently tell herself that, for now, their feelings had to be buried deep in their hearts, not allowed to overshadow anything else.

That night, their hearts drew closer in silent despair, yet they never broke free from the barriers between them. Though feelings had quietly blossomed between them, Ye Wan knew her decision was still fraught with hesitation and struggle. And perhaps Xie Linchuan, through her persistence, would find the true answer.
