Chapter 390: Selling Oneself to Become an Assassin
Chapter 390: Selling Oneself to Become an Assassin
After He Jinnian hurriedly left, Fang Xiaoxiao turned her head and looked at Li Renyi, who was anxious and restless, like an ant on a hot pan. She gently patted Li Renyi's shoulder and said softly, "Li Renyi, calm down and don't be so anxious. There's always a way out. There's always a solution to this."
Li Renyi raised his head, his eyes filled with helplessness and panic, and said in a tearful voice, "Xiaoxiao, how can I not be anxious! If I really marry the princess, my life will be over!"
Fang Xiaoxiao smiled slightly and comforted her, "Don't panic, let's think of a solution together."
Then, Fang Xiaoxiao turned to Zhou Wenjian and solemnly instructed, "Wenjian, I'd like to ask you to take good care of Lingxi Pavilion for now."
Zhou Wenjian nodded solemnly and replied, "Miss Xiao, don't worry, I'll keep an eye on things here."
Fang Xiaoxiao straightened her sleeves and stepped out of the Lingxi Pavilion. She hadn't gone far when a strange scene on the bustling street caught her eye. Not far ahead, three women were kneeling in the middle of the busy street, weeping bitterly. In front of them stood a simple sign that read, "Selling myself to bury my father."
Fang Xiao's heart tightened, and she involuntarily quickened her pace, wanting to go forward and find out what was going on.
Passersby gathered around, pointing and whispering about the three women, their laughter and jeers filling the air.
A slick-looking man sneered, "Look at him, daring to ask for such a high price, who would buy it!"
A tall, thin man next to him chimed in, "That's right, that's right, don't they know their own limitations?"
Just then, a rich young man dressed in fine clothes waved his fan and said with a grin, "Even if I bought him to be a maid, I'd think he'd be too ugly, hahaha!"
Just then, an old man with gray hair knelt down on the ground with a thud, tears streaming down his face, and cried out in a hoarse voice: "If any kind-hearted person will buy my old bones and help me kill that heartless son-in-law, my old life will belong to him from now on!"
The passersby showed no sympathy whatsoever; instead, they laughed and joked around.
Someone said sarcastically, "Wow, this is quite a show!"
Some people even laughed gleefully, saying, "Who would dare to kill someone!"
Fang Xiaoxiao frowned, her heart filled with doubt and sympathy, and muttered to herself, "What exactly is going on?"
The old man sobbed and wiped away his tears, saying in a tearful voice, "My poor daughter! A few days ago, that heartless son-in-law took her out of town, and since then, she's mysteriously disappeared. That damned son-in-law, on the other hand, somehow got a lot of money and spends all his time gambling and drinking! When I went to ask him about my daughter's whereabouts, he wouldn't say a word, but instead started punching and kicking me, and shamelessly claimed that he had sold my daughter to a monk!"
Upon hearing this, Fang Xiaoxiao's heart skipped a beat. She wondered to herself, "Could this be related to the monk kidnapping the woman we encountered in the dilapidated temple?" After a moment of contemplation, her gaze hardened, and she resolutely said, "Grandpa, don't be sad. I'll definitely help you with this!"
Upon hearing this, the old man trembled with excitement and almost knelt down before Fang Xiaoxiao, repeatedly saying, "My benefactor, you are my lifeline. I am willing to be your slave, to do your laundry and cook for you, even to wash your underwear, I would do it all willingly!"
Just then, a portly, lecherous man suddenly appeared. His tiny, beady eyes leered at the three weeping women, and he grinned, saying, "Hehe, I'll buy these three women. Name your price!" The lecherous man's words instantly caught the old man's attention.
The streets were bustling with people coming and going. The sun shone brightly on the ground, raising clouds of dust.
The old man first cautiously examined Fang Xiaoxiao's attire; it was simple but neat. Then, he turned his gaze to the lecherous man, whose rich clothes and luxurious appearance were undeniable. He swallowed hard and tentatively asked the lecherous man, "Sir, you're very wealthy, could you buy me too? I can do any kind of work!"
The sleazy man glanced at the old man with disdain, and snorted, "Buy you? You'd be better off feeding the dogs!"
Upon hearing this, the old man quickly put on a smiling face and said, "I'm good at feeding dogs. My family used to feed dogs. I guarantee I'll feed your dog until it's fat and strong!"
The lewd man flew into a rage, his eyes widening as he gritted his teeth and said, "You old bastard, you dare talk back! I'll chop you up and feed you to the dogs!"
Passersby burst into laughter upon hearing this. Some pointed at the old man and said, "This old man, he's gone crazy for money!" Others mocked, "He doesn't even look at himself, yet he expects people to buy from him!"
The laughter of passersby surged like a tidal wave, relentlessly assaulting the old man's already fragile heart. His face instantly turned ashen, utterly humiliated. He hung his head, his cloudy, despairing eyes filled with shame and helplessness, his body trembling uncontrollably as if he might collapse at any moment.
Under the scorching sun, the dust rising from the streets made the surrounding air murky and the noisy atmosphere made people increasingly irritable.
The sleazy man arrogantly pulled out three taels of silver from his pocket, waved it smugly in his hand, and looked as if the three taels of silver were a great blessing. He shouted at the top of his lungs, "These three taels of silver are enough to buy these three women!"
The three women cried their hearts out, their faces filled with grief and indignation, shouting, "Fifteen taels, not a tael less! We sisters would rather die than sell for this price!"
The sleazy man's face instantly turned even longer than a donkey's, and he cursed with a stingy look, "Fifteen taels? You should take a piss and look at yourselves in the mirror, you're not worth that much money!"
The old man, still shameless, practically knelt down and begged, "Sir, I don't want money. Just help me kill that damned son-in-law, and I'll be your slave for the rest of my life!"
The sleazy man looked disgusted and sneered, "Hmph, you old codger, keep dreaming!"
Fang Xiaoxiao could no longer bear it. Her eyebrows furrowed, and she shouted angrily, "Shut up, all of you!"
She quickly pulled twenty taels of silver from her purse, threw it in front of the three women, and said sharply, "Take these twenty taels!"
The three women were both surprised and delighted, and immediately kowtowed in gratitude: "Thank you so much for saving our lives, young lady!"
Seeing this, the lewd man flew into a rage, pointing at Fang Xiaoxiao's nose and shouting, "You brat, how dare you ruin my good time and disrupt the market!"
Fang Xiaoxiao crossed her arms, glanced at him disdainfully, and said coldly, "With so little money, you think you can bully people?"
Enraged, the lewd man raised his hand to hit Fang Xiaoxiao, cursing, "I'll teach you a lesson today!"
Passersby shook their heads and whispered, "This girl is in trouble!"
However, Fang Xiaoxiao dodged and delivered a resounding slap, sending the lewd man spinning in place.
