Chapter 1881 - 1878: Unlucky
With a bang, the white parachute opened. Lin Tian only felt his falling body jolt, finally no longer accelerating downward. A dozen seconds later, Lin Tian saw another canopy blossom open not far away—that was Xu Feibai’s parachute.
The two of them were immortal zombies, but right now they were obediently using parachutes; neither of them wanted to experience what it felt like to slam headfirst into the ground from several thousand meters up.
Lin Tian adjusted his direction, descending while drifting toward the distant ancient town, and Xu Feibai followed not far behind him.
As the parachute swayed, the full view of the ancient town gradually came into sight. Lin Tian poured his focus into his eyes and clearly saw the town. The streets inside the town crisscrossed in all directions, but they weren’t chaotic; the houses and roads were arranged according to some kind of orientation.
This is... an Eight Trigrams Array! Lin Tian’s eyes widened instantly. The roads, alleys, and houses within the town, plus the square in the middle, formed a complete Eight Diagram.
Green mountains and clear waters surrounded the ancient town. This "Eight Diagram City" seemed to be born out of nature itself, far from the dust and clamor of the mundane world, lying quietly amid the mountain ranges, absorbing nature’s spiritual energy.
Getting closer to the town, Lin Tian discovered another strange thing. Outside the town, at the foot of the mountain, there was faintly another cluster of buildings, but that complex was shrouded in hazy clouds and mist, making it impossible to see the whole picture clearly.
Where there are mountains and water, there’s bound to be plenty of mist; Lin Tian didn’t think much of that, but its superb geographic position astonished him. Although Lin Tian’s knowledge of feng shui was only half-baked, even so, he could tell that building complex was anything but ordinary.
On the left of the complex was a tall mountain, on the right a peak, its back against forested hills and its front facing a great river. On the opposite bank stood another peak; the surrounding mountains formed an embracing posture, like the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise sitting at the four directions, the Four Saints guarding, Heavenly Star shining down. The entire layout leaned on mountains and embraced water, majestic and grand.
The great river in front flowed in from the southeast and out toward the northwest, stretching like a jade belt, encircling it in a posture like cradling the moon. The water was gentle and long, like fortune itself; a household situated in this position was bound to enjoy endless, continuous luck.
The person who chose this spot for their home back then must have been deep and far-sighted, brimming with talent. Lin Tian already vaguely guessed that this cluster of buildings hidden in the clouds and mist was very likely Zhang’s Mansion.
The Zhang Family was an exorcist clan that had lasted a thousand years; this ancient town might very well exist because of the Zhang Family. In such a feng shui-perfect location, besides the Zhang Family, who else in this town could possibly hold it down?
Lin Tian turned his head to glance at Xu Feibai behind him and found that he was also staring at the town. This guy had lived for several hundred years; in feng shui he was definitely more proficient than Lin Tian.
However, Xu Feibai’s expression wasn’t one of surprise, but something very strange—Lin Tian couldn’t even put his finger on what kind of expression it was.
Just as Lin Tian’s attention wavered, a crosswind suddenly swept past, extremely fierce. The parachute that had been flying steadily was violently distorted by the pull; the falling speed suddenly increased, and he was also blown laterally by several hundred meters, deviating from his course.
Fortunately Lin Tian reacted quickly and did his utmost to control the direction, otherwise he would have been blown away. The wind up in the sky was nothing like the wind on the ground—coming without a trace, leaving without a shadow, sudden and violent.
Up in the air, Lin Tian’s body was full of Divine Power but nowhere to use it; aside from controlling the parachute, he couldn’t stomp off the ground like he could on land.
The crosswind came fast and went fast. Xu Feibai behind him, on the other hand, wasn’t affected. The distance between the two was instantly pulled open by this gust, their courses both shifted, growing farther and farther apart.
What left Lin Tian most speechless was that his descent speed had exceeded the normal range for a parachute jump. Lin Tian ultimately lacked real jump experience; if this were a seasoned parachutist, they should have been able to avoid this sudden situation.
But what had happened had happened, and Lin Tian wasn’t the timid type. He continued calmly controlling the parachute while raising his hand to signal Xu Feibai behind him in hand signs, telling him to rendezvous at the town’s central square after landing.
The distance between the two stretched further and further; their final landing points definitely wouldn’t be in the same place anymore.
The parachute traced an arc over the ancient town and dropped rapidly toward the mountain forest. Calling it "dropping" was generous—"plummeting" was more accurate.
Below was dense woodland, ancient trees towering into the sky; these trees were probably as old as the ancient town itself. Lin Tian was now diving straight toward the ancient forest.
One hundred meters... fifty meters, ten meters...
With a bang, before he even hit the ground he slammed into a big tree first. A chunk of bark exploded off; the massive tree, as thick as two people could encircle, was shaken so hard it rustled noisily. Countless leaves fell, mixed with dead branches, all crashing down onto him in one go.
Several startled large birds flapped into the air in a panic. Fine, fly off if you want—but before leaving they still dropped a few splats of bird crap, and one of them, of all places, was falling right toward Lin Tian’s face.
Damn your grandpa! Lin Tian cursed loudly, kicking off the trunk as his body swung outward, barely dodging the bird shit. But that crap still skimmed past the tip of his nose; with his extraordinary spiritual sense, Lin Tian could even feel the fresh, just-produced warmth.
Damn your great-grandpa, why the hell am I this unlucky. Lin Tian spat hard.
Right now the parachute was snagged in the tree, and he was hanging from the parachute, his whole body like someone being hanged—only upside down—about six or seven meters above the ground. These forest trees were really fucking tall.
Lin Tian drew his dagger and slashed a few times at the parachute cords. A dagger was standard gear for a jump; besides being used for wilderness survival, its most important purpose was to cut the cords if you got tangled.
As soon as the cords snapped, Lin Tian dropped from six or seven meters up—about two stories high. But that kind of height was nothing to him; he didn’t even bother to cushion, just slammed straight into the ground.
With a thump, the fallen leaves on the ground flew up. Lin Tian finally had his feet firmly on solid earth.
He patted the grass and dust off his clothes and started observing his surroundings. Everywhere his eyes reached it was trees and more trees. He had no idea of his exact position; he could only roughly tell that he had fallen on the back mountain and probably wasn’t too far from the ancient town.
With a bit of hope, Lin Tian took out his phone and found that he actually had one bar of signal. He had to thank the telecom provider; their coverage was really strong. At the same time Lin Tian also confirmed something—this place was indeed not far from the ancient town.
But when Lin Tian opened the map for positioning, he found it couldn’t locate him, not a single satellite. He had no choice but to give up using the map.
Communication signals relied on nearby transmission towers, while positioning needed GPS satellites. So having cell signal didn’t necessarily mean having satellite signal.
Thinking it over, Lin Tian still made a call to Xu Feibai. He didn’t know if the signal was bad, but it rang for a long time before connecting.
As soon as the line picked up, Xu Feibai said something begging for a beating: "Watching you drop straight down, I thought you were dead."
"Dead your ass, cut the crap. Where are you now?" Lin Tian snapped, thoroughly annoyed.
Xu Feibai seemed to be observing the terrain; only after a good while did he answer, "I landed on a grassy patch by the river. From where I am I can see the ancient town, and... I can also see that building complex."
