Officer Jiang glanced at him indifferently and then looked away.
"Oh, Wenling, they're from the same country as you, you can go in too." The sheriff came over and patted Jiang Wenling on the shoulder twice.
In the vast space.
Gu Xinglan sat uneasily in the chair, but her eyes were open and honest, glancing at the person sitting opposite her from time to time.
But the other party didn't even glance at us.
"Let's get the visa out first."
"The visa is at the hotel," Gu Xinglan said.
"Hotel? Which hotel?"
He added, "The Kriffin Hotel."
“There are four Clifton hotels here. Lying won’t work. Tell me honestly, did you come here illegally?”
Officer Jiang acted as the interpreter without any emotional fluctuation, relaying the police chief's words verbatim.
Compared to the red-necked sheriff with a grim face and flushed cheeks, Officer Jiang was aloof and seemed more like the master of the place.
“We cannot let you go back to the hotel to get your visa right now. If you cannot provide specific hotel information, we can only temporarily list you as a suspicious person.”
Li and Tai came to Lexington with him, and it was Clifton who led them to find a hotel.
He was in a foreign land, unfamiliar with the streets, and his phone wasn't with him either.
Gu Xinglan looked pleadingly at the only acquaintance she knew, "I can make a phone call. As long as I can contact the hotel, they can verify our identities."
The sheriff glanced at him impatiently, his eyes scrutinizing him, before turning to the man beside him and saying a few words.
"I'll give you five minutes." Officer Jiang looked at him calmly and pushed the phone in front of Gu Xinglan.
The phone is still the same, with a yellowish casing and a lucky charm tucked inside.
He quickly picked it up and dialed the hotel front desk.
After ringing a few times, the call was finally answered.
"Hello, this is the Clifton Hotel in Lexington, Cartaquil. How can I help you?"
A gentle female voice came from the other end of the phone.
"Hello, I am a guest staying at your hotel. My name is Gu Xinglan and my room number is... uh, I don't quite remember. I need you to help me confirm my check-in information. I am currently at the police station because of some things and I need you to help me prove my identity."
There was a few seconds of silence on the other end of the phone, followed by the sound of typing. After a while, the receptionist said, "Mr. Gu, your room number is 1208. Your check-in information has been confirmed. Would you like us to send the relevant information to the police station?"
"That's wonderful, thank you so much!"
Gu Xinglan breathed a sigh of relief, held her breath for a long time, and quickly handed the phone to the other end, her eyes unable to suppress a relieved smile.
"The hotel receptionist can verify my identity."
He can book local hotels, not small inns, and the fact that he can book means he has a visa.
The sheriff took the phone, said a few words briefly, and then hung up, his expression softening somewhat.
"We will verify the information provided by the hotel. Until then, you will need to wait here."
"..."
Taking a statement seemed to be particularly difficult because he was a foreigner, especially verifying his identity information, which took a very long time.
More than two hours passed, and his butt was almost stiff from sitting for so long, before he finally saw the belated sheriff arrive.
The sheriff still had tiny coffee stains around his mouth.
"How is it?!" He stood up immediately.
"The information review is complete. As for today's theater fire, it has been preliminarily determined to be an electrical malfunction. Come back tomorrow to explain what happened today. We're closing now."
Off work?
Gu Xinglan stood there, stunned, thinking she had misheard.
"Still not leaving?"
The sheriff had already arrived at the door, but Gu Xinglan was still standing there, looking dazed.
This Asian man was in a sorry state; he not only smelled burnt, but his entire body was covered in soot.

After leaving the police station, Gu Xinglan stood on the street.
The exotic streets, the sparse crowds, and the sunset's glow that made the town look like an alchemical furnace all contributed to an extended sense of loneliness.
Li Hetai was picked up by the Li family in advance. If he hadn't asked beforehand, he might still be foolishly looking for people nearby.
"Mr. Gu." The man across the street was carrying a bag.
Jiang Wenling walked slowly to Gu Xinglan and said, "It's been a long time."
"Officer Jiang, it's been a long time." Gu Xinglan avoided eye contact.
It seems the Li family is still keeping an eye on Li Hetai. After all, the police are right here, and these two irreconcilable forces are bound to be in a hurry to take him away.
But we left him here.
The more he thought about it, the more disappointed he became.
"Mr. Gu, I'll be there at eight o'clock sharp tomorrow. I've already consulted with the police chief, and he'll be in charge of you then." He then handed over the coffee from the bag.
He wasn't sure if it was just his imagination because it was evening, but he felt that the other person's gaze was particularly intense.
"May I ask why you are here?" Gu Xinglan took the gift with both hands, casting an inquiring glance at her.
Unexpectedly, he thought the other party would give him a few words to brush him off, but he didn't expect them to say this: "I came here to attend a seminar and some meetings. Recently, a major case was discovered in two places, so I was sent here."
It turns out it was about combating transnational crime.
Gu Xinglan chuckled slightly, "Is it alright for you to tell me this?"
"This is a public fact; the news reports it more than I have."
Jiang Wenling exuded a chill. Although it was impossible to tell that he was smiling, looking into his eyes, one could tell that the other person was indeed in a good mood.
He didn't know where that sense of familiarity came from.
"How about we go out for dinner together?"
The officer spoke in a declarative tone.
He shook his head and declined, saying, "I'm not feeling well today and just want to get some rest. Thank you, Officer Jiang."
"No need to be so polite. My surname is Jiang. Just call me Wenling."
Gu Xinglan nodded hurriedly.
What if the Li family is using this police officer to test him?
He did want to ask about today's events, such as whether the fire at the theater was really due to electrical malfunction, whether there were any traces of anyone there, and whether Clifton was missing or burned to death. But the police station's inefficiency left him speechless.
In particular, the Li family might have sent someone to secretly watch him, to see if he would have an affair with the police officer in front of him.
After their dry conversation, Gu Xinglan was already planning to slip away.
Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of a figure.
Sure enough, the Li family sent someone to keep an eye on him.
The sun was setting, and the wind was still sultry, carrying the smells of mud, stones, and grass baked by the high temperatures.
Looking through the glow of the sunset, all you could see was a long, narrow black shadow.
Gu Xinglan first squinted, somewhat incredulous, then widened her eyes and jogged to the end of the dark shadow.
It really is Lai Ho Tai.
Li Hetai's face was sallow from the light, and he wore sunglasses, giving him a mature appearance.
They could also hear Li Hetai's voice, which was slightly hoarse due to puberty: "Let's go."
Gu Xinglan raised her hand and used her arm to block Li Hetai's face.
With Jiang Wenling casting a gaze from behind, Gu Xinglan did it instinctively.
In Li Hetai's line of sight, he first saw Gu Xinglan's wary face, and only then did he see the people far away.
Does Gu Xinglan not want him to be discovered by the police?
For no apparent reason, the corners of Li Hetai's mouth turned up 0.1px.
