Chapter 33 The Pain of Confession
Chapter 33 The Pain of Confession
Although the lunch was very lavish, everyone in the department ate quietly, their heads down, in a very restrained and subdued manner. After all, who wouldn't feel pressured eating with the boss?
"My tongue went numb from shock. I couldn't even taste the lobster anymore. What a waste of such a delicious dish," Xiao Ai complained to the others in the elevator.
"You're so pathetic," Judy teased. "I just bury my head in my food and don't think about anything else. After all, I wouldn't normally eat a meal like this myself."
"What's going on, Mr. Wen? Seriously." Johnny scratched his head. He had also been having a hard time eating, barely daring to breathe, fearing it might be some kind of trap.
"What else could it be? It's all about that intern." Xiao Ai, being a loose cannon, blurted out.
Just as Xia Lan was leaving, President Wen called her back, so she didn't come down the elevator with everyone else. That's why Xiao Ai dared to speak recklessly without thinking.
"Shh!" Judy quickly made a shushing gesture to her, telling her not to gossip about other people.
“Oh yeah, that day Xiao Ai and Judy said they saw Xia Lan get out of President Wen’s car,” Da Hai suddenly chimed in from the side.
"What?!" Johnny suddenly became interested. "Oh, I see. I was just wondering why. I knew those two were acting strangely." He looked at Xiao Ai excitedly. "What else do you know? Tell us quickly."
Judy shrugged: "That's all. That day, Xiao Ai and I only saw Xia Lan get out of President Wen's car."
"That's all the information?" Johnny looked disappointed. "It's not enough to satisfy the gossip lovers." He glanced resentfully at Xu Chen, who was hiding in the corner trying his best not to participate in their gossip. "And you? After spending so many days together, do you know anything?"
Xu Chen shook his head expressionlessly; he wasn't interested in such gossip.
Stepping out of the elevator and back into the team's office area, Xiao Ai's eyes darted around before she finally spoke: "Actually... I do know a little bit."
"Tell us quickly!" Everyone's eyes widened, and they swarmed around, speaking in unison. (Except for Xu Chen)
“Uh, I have a good relationship with Awei from the HR department, right?” Xiao Ai was startled by everyone’s sudden enthusiasm and quickly organized her thoughts: “According to him, when he was in charge of sending out contracts, he discovered that Xia Lan’s address was General Manager Wen’s home.”
"Wow! I knew this intern was no ordinary person!" Tina exclaimed. "She might be related to President Wen! We'd better be careful."
“No, no, no,” Johnny said with a knowing look, “Haven’t you seen the news lately?”
"What news?" Tina asked, puzzled.
"I know!" Dahai raised his hand and answered quickly, "It's the report about President Wen liking girls!"
Judy covered her mouth in surprise: "Wow, that's amazing! Is Xia Lan Mr. Wen's girlfriend?"
“They don’t look like relatives at all,” Johnny said with great certainty, as if she had been there before: “I saw them exchanging sweet nothings just now.”
Several people were excitedly discussing the relationship between Wen Shiyu and Xia Lan when Xu Chen quickly walked out, picked up some documents, and pretended to be passing by them. He lowered his voice and said, "They're back, stop talking!"
The group quickly looked up and saw Xia Lan walk in. Everyone scattered immediately, pretending nothing had happened, leaving Xia Lan completely bewildered.
However, Xia Lan didn't have time to care what her colleagues were doing.
After all, she was just up there...
The scene then returns to the moment when everyone leaves the meeting room.
While saying thank you for your hard work, Lu He asked Mina to take the others back downstairs first, as she wanted to learn more about the situation from the interns, so she kept Xia Lan behind.
In the vast space, only Lu He and Xia Lan remained.
The two looked at each other, then remained silent.
long silence.
Lu He spoke first: "Can we... make up?"
"Do we have any conflicts?" Xia Lan tilted her head, looking innocent and harmless.
“Xiao Lan…” Lu He’s eyes showed some grievance and restraint: “I…I really want to become a close person with you…” She knew in her heart what her purpose was in approaching Xia Lan. She didn’t want to lie, but she couldn’t tell the truth.
"A very close person?" Xia Lan smiled calmly, feigning ease: "What kind of closeness?" After what happened between them, you can't just say they're friends in the end.
"I...we can be very good friends, the kind of friends who are very close..." Lu He stammered out this answer.
Xia Lan smiled faintly, but sighed inwardly. Yes, the first time was an accident, and the second time was because she had drunk too much and pounced on Xiao Yu. In the end, Xiao Yu shouldn't have to bear such an awkward situation alone.
“Wen Shiyu…” Xia Lan suddenly stopped smiling, took a deep breath, mustered her courage, and said in a gentle but firm voice, “I don’t want to just be friends with you… Can we be lovers?”
"!" Lu He was surprised. She hadn't expected that the seemingly delicate girl in her eyes would actually be so direct with her...
Seeing that Wen Shiyu just stood there, stunned and not answering, Xia Lan's eyes dimmed, revealing disappointment: "You don't want to... I was too forward..."
"No!" Lu He shouted almost instinctively, "It's not that I'm unwilling!"
"Then... do you like me too?" Xia Lan's eyes sparkled again, her voice filled with joy.
“Xiao Lan…” Lu He did not answer Xia Lan’s question directly: “Can you accept the fact that I might disappear at any time?”
Although Xia Lan didn't understand what Lu He was trying to say, she figured that the other person probably had some kind of trouble, but she didn't mind, so she nodded seriously.
Lu He smiled with relief: "Alright, Xiao Lan, I, Wen Shiyu, am willing to be your lover." She still chose to keep it a secret, even though she now had feelings for Xia Lan, even if it was just to replace the person from the past, even if it was to complete a mission. No matter how she considered it, agreeing was the best course of action.
Lu He bit her lip, repeatedly reminding herself that Xia Lan was just a comic book character, just a two-dimensional person, just a line without a real soul or real emotions. All of her current actions were given by the author.
But why do I feel a little reluctant to do it?
