Chapter 12 The Origin of the Valley of Passion
Chapter 12 The Origin of the Valley of Passion
Qiu Ziyue asked curiously, "Valley Master, how was the Valley of Passion established?"
Qiu Ruoshui continued, "During the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, both Emperor Xuanzong and Consort Yang were extremely fond of music. In order to promote art, Consort Yang told Emperor Xuanzong that music should be harmoniously integrated with nature to be more beautiful and melodious. In order to make Consort Yang happy, Emperor Xuanzong chose a location in Tongshan to establish a court troupe of entertainers, named Chiqing Valley."
The name "Chiqing Valley" signifies deep affection and devotion, reflecting Emperor Xuanzong's love and fondness for his beloved concubine.
Then Emperor Xuanzong ordered a musician surnamed Qiu to lead a group of top court musicians to the top of Tongshan Mountain to teach many musically talented people, and distributed a large sum of money to support the development of Chiqing Valley.
From then on, the musicians of the Valley of Passionate Love were treated better than ever, with no worries about food and clothing, and with unlimited gold and silver.
Qiu Ziyue listened intently, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
She thought to herself, no wonder this place is so awesome. The master and disciples don't have to work, they can live a life of comfort and enjoy treatment that is even more comfortable than that of landlords and rich people.
"And then what happened, Valley Master?" Qiu Ziyue asked.
"Actually, the purpose of the Valley of Passion is to inherit and develop musical art and cultivate top musical talents, but later..."
Qiu Ruoshui paused for a moment and said, "Later, after the Imperial Concubine committed suicide at Mawei Slope, Emperor Xuanzong was extremely saddened. He did not understand what his deep affection had been exchanged for."
Qiu Ruoshui continued, "So Emperor Xuanzong asked himself, as an emperor, should he not be infatuated, should he be heartless, empty of affection, or resentful? So he ordered that the Valley of Infatuation be divided into four valleys, namely the Valley of Infatuation, the Valley of Heartbreak, the Valley of Empty Affection, and the Valley of Resentment."
"I see. The four valleys are indeed quite divided. They even have to hold a martial arts competition every five years. Sigh."
Qiu Ruoshui shook her head and said.
"The four valleys of Passion, Heartbreak, Empty Love, and Resentment have developed independently, forming unique musical styles and cultures."
Qiu Ziyue nodded, indicating her understanding: "I see. No wonder we four valleys often exchange musical skills."
Qiu Ruoshui continued, "Yes, over the years, the four valleys have indeed frequently exchanged musical skills, learned from each other, and made progress together. But you may not know that there is a deeper mystery hidden behind this."
Qiu Ruoshui paused for a moment, her tone becoming serious: "In reality, each valley is supported and manipulated by different royal forces. These royal forces often use exchanges and martial arts competitions between our four valleys to achieve their goals in order to compete for power and resources."
Upon hearing this, Qiu Ziyue's face showed a look of shock: "Valley Master, you mean..."
Qiu Ruoshui nodded: "That's right. The Qin Jian Martial Arts Competition, held every five years, is not only a contest of music and martial arts, but also a political game. Various royal forces use the results of the competition to measure and adjust their status in the martial arts world."
Qiu Ziyue remained silent for a moment, then a resolute glint flashed in her eyes: "Valley Master, I understand. We must not only improve our musical and martial arts skills, but also remain vigilant against the conspiracies behind these events."
Qiu Ruoshui nodded in satisfaction: "That's exactly right. Ziyue, you're a smart girl. Right now, Emperor Zhaozong is young, and the various regional warlords are trying to win over heroes from all walks of life in the martial arts world."
“However, their purposes are different. I believe you can understand and recognize the situation, assess the circumstances, protect the Valley of Passion, and ensure that the skills and essence painstakingly cultivated by our predecessors are not lost among the people.” Qiu Ruoshui paused and said cautiously.
Qiu Ziyue listened thoughtfully and said, "Valley Master, I understand what you mean."
Qiu Ruoshui smiled and nodded: "Very good, Ziyue. Let's work together to promote the music and art of Chiqing Valley and make it a refreshing force in the martial arts world."
Upon hearing this, Qiu Ziyue remembered Tao Ling'er's last wish and thought that she might as well take this opportunity to ask Qiu Ruoshui about her understanding of Qi Yuxuan.
So Qiu Ziyue asked, "Valley Master, may I ask about the situation in the other valleys? Also, I heard that there is a man named Qi Yuxuan in the Valley of Heartbreak. What kind of person is he?"
After listening, Qiu Ruoshui asked, "What do you mean by 'other valleys'?"
"It's the Valley of Heartbreak, the Valley of Empty Love, and the Valley of Resentment. What new developments have there been in the past few years?" Qiu Ziyue said.
"We have a rule in our four valleys that every five years we invite some new generation people to participate in the martial arts competition. Whichever valley wins the crown, the other valleys must obey its orders. Qi Yuxuan of the Valley of Heartbreak is a young hero and the best swordsman. In particular, his junior sister Qi Yushuang is an excellent dancer. The two of them have been childhood sweethearts and I heard that they are already engaged. The two of them won the crown in the last zither and sword competition, which made others envious."
"What? Qi Yuxuan is already engaged?" Qiu Ziyue exclaimed in surprise.
She thought to herself, "Qi Yuxuan is already engaged, what is Tao Ling'er still so infatuated about? She's still thinking about marrying Qi Yuxuan? Isn't Tao Ling'er clearly trying to frame her, making her a mistress? What kind of nonsense is this…"
No no no.
"Ziyue, what are you thinking about? Didn't you meet Qi Yuxuan last time? Why are you asking me these things again?" Qiu Ruoshui said.
"It's nothing, Valley Master," Qiu Ziyue said, blushing.
"What about the other...other...valleys, Valley Master?" Qiu Ziyue continued to ask.
“Zhao Wanqing from Kongqing Valley is also a stunning dancer, and Liu Mengdie from Yuanqing Valley is also excellent. They are both beautiful and have exquisite dance moves. They are your biggest competitors, so you have to be careful,” Qiu Ruoshui said.
“Master, you’ve been training me to be the successor of the Valley of Passion these past few years. Have you ever thought about training someone else? Besides, Tao Ling’er before… well, I mean me before, I wasn’t very smart,” Qiu Ziyue said.
“Your four masters and I have also considered this, but you were entrusted by an old friend. At first, we thought that with our top-notch skills, we could definitely make you shine. But we were wrong. You really didn’t have much talent in the zither and sword before. However, things have come to this, and we can only accept our fate. But, fortunately…” Qiu Ruoshui said.
"Valley Master, what's so good about it?" Qiu Ziyue asked curiously.
"Fortunately, you became smarter after falling off the cliff. I think you will definitely achieve something different in the martial arts competition five years from now. I believe in you," Qiu Ruoshui said, looking at Qiu Ziyue with hope in her eyes.
Qiu Ziyue thought for a moment and said, "Valley Master, no, I'm actually quite under pressure."
"Child, pressure is motivation. I believe that with your talent and foundation, you will definitely shine anew," Qiu Ruoshui said confidently.
“Oh, right, there’s one more thing I need to clarify,” Qiu Ruoshui said.
"What, Valley Master?" Qiu Ziyue asked curiously.
“That’s right, a year from now, I will give you what your mother left you, but during this year, you must devote yourself to cultivation, is that alright?” Qiu Ziyue asked.
"Disciple will respectfully obey the Valley Master's instructions," Qiu Ziyue replied.
As night deepened, Qiu Ruoshui and Qiu Ziyue's conversation came to an end.
The two stood up, smiled at each other, and Qiu Ziyue left the Valley Master's room.
As Qiu Ruoshui watched her retreating figure, she thought to herself, perhaps this girl could give hope to the Valley of Passion.
