Chapter 49: The World in the Mirror
Chapter 49: The World in the Mirror
Are you sure we won't get lost?
"There's not even a probability of direction in this place, so I don't know how to divine the route."
"And I always feel like it's dangerous here..."
Listening to the anxious chatter beside her, Sirien shook her head slightly: "With you here, you won't get lost. Have you ever seen a lost 'fortune teller'?"
"I've never met a 'fortune teller' other than myself." Owen curled his lip, stood his wooden cane upright on the ground, and then let go.
The cane remained eerily still, neither falling nor changing.
Irving scratched the back of his head, bewildered. "Uh... the divination stick spell failed?"
"It's also possible that the next passage is right above us."
Sirion looked up and a dark, illusory, and unreal road appeared before him.
There are many more such dark roads around, including where they are standing. They are intricately interwoven into a mysterious "spider web" with no visible boundaries, together forming a profound and bizarre world that is different from reality.
A world in the mirror!
After some rather immature thought, Sirion decided to seek out the destiny revelation that Owen had seen.
Although he felt this was most likely a scripted arrangement, it was also true that there was a hidden treasure; he would probably get paid if he diligently completed the script that was arranged behind the scenes.
As his thoughts raced, he heard Owen's hesitant voice: "The next passage is overhead. How do we get up there?"
"Let's go straight."
As he spoke, Sirion reached out and pressed his hand against the air in front of him.
A vague, intangible, dark blue door suddenly appeared where his palm was pressed.
Unlike the "doors" he usually made on the wall, the blurry, dark blue door seemed to blend into its surroundings and the world in the mirror.
It strangely severed the illusory path in front of Cyrien, yet it was connected to the passage above their heads.
The "Apprentice's" abilities have undergone some changes in the Mirror World, and have already taken the form of a portal.
Irving stared in disbelief at the scene, his unblinking blue eyes seeming to say: "You can do that?"
Cyril nodded slightly and explained, "It's possible in the mirror world."
"Although this place looks real, it is not the real world. It is more like a collection of doors, composed of countless illusory passages, connecting different mirrors and different mysterious kingdoms."
"Because it is essentially a collection of countless 'doors,' the 'apprentice' can influence the surroundings to a certain extent, connecting the 'doors' that are not connected, or closing the 'doors' that are open. The latter cannot be done directly; it requires some external assistance, which is very troublesome."
"However, I think not all 'apprentices' can do this. Under normal circumstances, ordinary 'apprentices' shouldn't even be able to enter the mirror world."
"Right." Owen belatedly realized, "My father didn't leave me any information about the Mirror World, which means that 'apprentices' before Sequence 7 can't enter the Mirror World at all. How did you manage to do that?"
Cyril explained simply, "Due to some unspeakable factors, my 'door-opening' ability has undergone some positive changes."
Irving nodded slightly and didn't ask any further questions. The two walked into the dark blue door in front of them, one after the other.
The next second, the two figures appeared in the illusory passage that was originally above their heads, but in their perception, they were still moving forward steadily.
Owen looked around in amazement: "How amazing! Could you open a 'door' that leads to our destination?"
"No." Sirien shook his head directly: "The distance is too far. My manipulation of the 'door' cannot extend beyond what I can see."
"Moreover, this operation is not as safe as you think. Getting lost is just one of the potential risks. Some 'doors' are not in fixed locations. If you randomly connect 'doors' that are not connected, you might end up in an abyss or even in the starry sky."
Irving glanced at the still-present, dark blue gate behind him and suddenly felt a wave of fear.
"Um... let's continue walking. I feel like we're not far from our destination."
Xireen nodded slightly, but before he could speak, a sudden change occurred around him. On the originally dark and illusory road, colors of green, bright red, and dark black appeared out of thin air and quickly spread, as if a canvas had been splashed with oil paint.
The next second, he saw a darkness unlike the shadowy world in the mirror, and felt the damp, slightly warm air around him.
They have escaped the world in the mirror, but they don't seem to have fully entered reality!
"How could this be..."
"Be careful!"
Cyril interrupted Owen's question, reaching out to pull him forward and sideways for a short distance.
Where they had stood, a thin blade of wind silently swept across, leaving a long, narrow groove in the ground.
call out!call out!
The sound of air being torn apart came in rapid succession, and more intense and powerful wind blades attacked from the darkness than before.
"Depend on!"
A flash of eerie blue light appeared, and Cyril dragged Owen away from where he stood.
The wind blade then swept across the area, and several shards of mirror fell to the ground with a clattering sound.
Cyril carried a mirror with him and hid in the mirror world before being hit by the wind blades.
At the same time, indescribable transparent shadows and dark liquids appeared out of thin air, and pale hands reached out from the liquids, grasping at something in the air.
In the mirror world, Cyril observed the outside world through the broken shards of the mirror. Looking at the dense, transparent shadows and pale palms, he subconsciously rubbed his elbow; the scene was a bit triggering his trypophobia.
The next second, a pure, blazing, clear light suddenly descended from the sky from the center, which was surrounded by countless transparent shadows and pale palms.
Whether it was a transparent shadow or a pale hand, both gradually became transparent in this sacred light that was so much like the "sun," and finally turned into ashes and vanished into nothingness.
As the undead creatures were cleared away, Cyrien finally saw clearly who had attacked them.
It was a tall, adult male with a distinctive broad chin. His brown hair was tied up in an ancient warrior's topknot at the back of his head. He was lifted into the air by the wind, and the wind surrounding him seemed to be a group of loyal soldiers guarding him.
Seemingly noticing Cyril's gaze, he looked over, his dark green eyes filled with undisguised killing intent and coldness.
The next second, on the clearing ground that had just been cleared by the holy light of the "Sun" domain, one after another huge humanoid skeleton appeared out of thin air.
Each of them was four or five meters tall, with black flames burning in their eye sockets, and their white bones were illusory and hazy, like a giant undead Scourge army.
In the darkness below, which resembled the surface of water, pale, illusory hands grew out again. They were like rubber, stretched very long, and kept waving upwards, trying to grab the tall figure surrounded by the wind.
Before the massive skeleton and pale arms drew near, Cyril saw the person surrounded in the center with outstretched arms, as if to embrace the sun.
But the light he expected didn't fall; instead, he froze on the spot, as if possessed by an evil spirit, unable to control his own body.
While hiding in the mirror world and spying on the outside world, Cyril belatedly noticed that a figure had suddenly appeared in his field of vision.
Because of the light and distance, he couldn't see clearly, but he could make out that the figure that suddenly appeared was not very tall, wearing a silk top hat and a black tuxedo.
Those surrounding figures, much taller and more terrifying than him, with their skeletal remains and pale hands, appeared inexplicably small and weak in comparison to his stature.
Cyril suddenly lowered his head. He saw the truth in the other person, a world belonging to the dead, and the giant feathered serpent coiled in the sky above that land of death.
Although he couldn't see the other person's face clearly, he already knew who the other person was and what the current situation was.
He encountered Azik Eggers' attempt to ambush Zilingus, and was unlucky enough to be caught in the crossfire.
...This is outrageous! Although I guessed that the revelation from the crystal ball would be dangerous, I never expected that the danger would not be in the treasure itself, but in the path they had taken.
As his thoughts drifted, he saw Qilingus's body rapidly decaying in mid-air, rotting until it oozed yellowish-green pus and until pieces of flesh fell off one after another.
