Chapter 33 A Battle of Wits with a Group of Old Women
"How can it have nothing to do with Qi Tongwei? Xiao Li, tell me."
Wang Fuzhen hates Qi Tongwei to the core. He sent his daughter to Kyoto, so far away, while he was in a relationship, beat his son Chen Hai, and now he has even angered his husband to the point of hospitalization.
"Prosecutor Ji, Old Chen and Qi Tongwei had a heated argument about Duan Xiaojun's case today."
Xiao Li's words were quite cryptic.
"Xiao Ji, did you hear that? Old Chen is already so old, and Qi Tongwei is still arguing with him. I think Qi Tongwei is doing it on purpose, to get revenge on us for not agreeing to his relationship with Chen Yang. He's a complete scoundrel, he doesn't know how to respect the elderly at all."
"Xiao Ji, tell me, can someone with such a lack of public morality serve the people? The procuratorate should get rid of this kind of person."
"Xiao Ji, say something! Or I'll go directly to your chief prosecutor."
Ji Changming had a headache, his brain was throbbing. Had Qi Tongwei lost his mind? Why did he have to argue with an old revolutionary?
"Aunt Wang, I will definitely give him a good talking-to when I get back, and bring him here to apologize to Old Master Chen."
"Alright, alright, why are you making things difficult for Xiao Ji? It's normal to argue about cases. That kid is right about one thing: we can't abuse our power."
Chen Yanshi considers himself a public-spirited person and does not want to be associated with a reputation for abusing his power to suppress young people.
"If you, Old Chen, were abusing your power, your daughter wouldn't have had to go all the way to Kyoto. Doesn't Qi Tongwei know that? He's just deliberately trying to provoke you."
Wang Fuzhen wouldn't listen to any of the advice; she was convinced that it was Qi Tongwei's fault, and a huge one at that.
Chen Yanshi was used to it; the old lady loved to nag. "Xiao Ji, the doctor said I'm fine, you can go back to work now."
"Okay, Mr. Chen, take good care of yourself."
Ji Changming can only hide now. Qi Tongwei, you are my nemesis.
The home of Liang Qunfeng, Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission.
Liang Qunying, Yang Ming's younger sister, rushed into the house. "Brother, you're Yang Ming's uncle! You can't let him go to jail!"
"He won't go to jail; at most, he'll lose his job as a police officer."
The officialdom in Handong may seem calm on the surface, but there are undercurrents beneath, and Liang Qunfeng has to be careful.
"Brother, with your high-ranking position, you can't even protect a lowly policeman?"
"I wouldn't understand the ways of officialdom even if I explained them to you. It's good for him to learn a lesson. He's committed so many crimes since he was a child. It's better that he didn't become a policeman. The country is now promoting economic development; let him go into business."
"Brother, it's fine if Yang Ming doesn't become a policeman, but that kid who harmed him absolutely cannot be let off easily. You can send him to some remote, impoverished place with just a word, right?"
Liang Qunfeng sneered. That kid must have hit the jackpot by saving a Hong Kong businessman and getting on Secretary Xu's good side. How could he so blatantly exile him to the frontier?
"Don't worry about this. Once Yang Ming gets out, I'll find him a way. You don't need to worry about it."
"Brother, if you think it's beneath you to get involved, I'll do it myself. I'll make sure that kid is completely disgraced and gets kicked out of the prosecutor's office."
"Auntie, please don't make things worse. Dad will handle this."
Liang Lu was a little scared. Ever since Qi Tongwei had a big fight with the police at school last time, and wasn't afraid even with a gun pointed at him, what did he have to be afraid of?
The next day at work, Qi Tongwei respectfully handed over a 3,000-word self-criticism to Ji Changming.
Ji Changming took a look at the self-criticism and saw that it was written in this kid's handwriting. Oh well, out of sight, out of mind.
"Did you know that Old Chen is in the hospital?"
Qi Tongwei felt a chill run down his spine; he was about to be blamed again.
"Prosecutor Ji, I did argue with Old Chen about Duan Xiaojun's case, but he was perfectly fine when I left. You can't blame me, or I'd be so wronged."
Ji Changming wanted to get angry, but then he thought better of it. Getting angry with this kid every day would shorten his own lifespan.
"I only have one request for you: show some respect to older comrades, and think about your own parents, okay?"
"Okay, quarterly inspection."
Ji Changming waved his hand, telling Qi Tongwei to get lost. He barely spoke anymore; he was exhausted.
Back in the office, Fan Youliang, holding a thermos, said sarcastically:
"Comrade Qi Tongwei, you are truly amazing! You managed to make an old revolutionary like Chen so angry that he was hospitalized. I, Fan Youliang, am completely impressed. From now on, you are my leader."
"Director Fan, really?"
Gao Qi immediately cooperated with Fan Youliang's performance.
"It can't possibly be fake. It's all over the provincial procuratorate. You should avoid him in the future."
Gao Qi gave a thumbs up, "Comrade Qi Tongwei, I've offended you a lot in the past, please be magnanimous and let it go like it was nothing."
"Director Fan, the quarterly inspector just told me to show more respect to the older comrades. But now it seems that some of them are disrespectful and abuse their age; they don't deserve my respect."
"You bastard Qi Tongwei, I, Fan Youliang, will see how long you can stay in the procuratorate."
"Director Fan, you're already half-buried in the earth, don't humiliate yourself further."
"Qi Tongwei, go back and talk about your parents like that too."
My parents aren't as foul-mouthed as you.
In a fierce exchange with Qi Tongwei, Fan Youliang found himself struggling to keep up, and Gao Qi quickly went to support him.
"Qi Tongwei is in that office. Call him out here."
The sound of several women arguing loudly could be heard outside.
Liang Qunying brought three of her mahjong partners to challenge Qi Tongwei.
Gao Qi rushed out, eager to see what would happen, shouting, "Qi Tongwei is here!"
Liang Qunying and her sister jogged over, "Young man, that's Qi Tongwei."
"Auntie, this is Qi Tongwei."
After Gao Qi finished speaking, he quickly stepped back. He knew from this posture that nothing good was going to happen.
Liang Qunying spoke with an imperious air, "You are Qi Tongwei."
Sensing hostility, Qi Tongwei automatically switched to offensive mode, asking, "Who are you, and what do you want with me?"
"Who am I? I'm Yang Ming's mother. You've detained my son? You've got some nerve!"
Liang Qunying is used to being aloof and doesn't care about such things at all.
Qi Tongwei didn't tolerate her either, and he had just warmed up by arguing with Fan Youliang.
"You have the nerve to come to the procuratorate? How did you raise your son? It's the father's fault if the son is not taught. I think Yang Ming has been spoiled by you. He doesn't know how to reflect on his actions and instead tries to accuse you first."
Liang Qunying and her sisters were a little stunned. They hadn't even started their attack yet, but this kid had already opened fire.
"Is this how your parents taught you to speak to your elders?"
"I don't know you well, don't pretend to be a relative."
At this point, Liang Qunying's sisters started firing at the same time.
"You little bastard, I'm older than your mother, and you dare to point fingers at me? You're a worthless brat who was born but never raised!"
"This little bastard is a country bumpkin; his parents are illiterate, so what does he know about manners?"
"He looks respectable enough, but the moment he opens his mouth, that rustic, rural accent comes right out."
"With his despicable character, he dares to dream of climbing the social ladder in the city. Any one of us could kill him with a flick of our fingers."
Fan Youliang and Gao Qi were genuinely delighted by the fierce demeanor of these women.
Several elderly women told Qi Tongwei to surrender, but no way. They said he didn't care about life or death and that if he didn't agree, they would fight him.
"You old ladies are dressed quite fashionably, but you should wear more makeup. If you're going to try to look young, at least cover up the wrinkles on your face."
"What's wrong with being from the countryside? When we were sent to the countryside, you were all scrambling to eat the sweet potatoes from the latrines. Have you forgotten already?"
