Chapter 209 Hidden dangers in tranquility
Return to base
The large force finally returned to the temporary base safely, but everyone looked exhausted, with complex emotions written all over their faces after surviving the disaster.
Cheng Yuwei followed Ling Xiaotian into the headquarters, where they were alone. She took off his bloodstained coat and discovered that the wound on his shoulder wasn't a "flesh wound" as he'd described it. It was a deep scratch that almost penetrated the muscle.
"Are you just going to leave it like this?" Cheng Yuwei said with a cold face as she took out the first aid kit she carried with her.
Ling Xiaotian smiled faintly, "It's really okay. I've suffered more serious injuries than this."
Cheng Yuwei raised her head and glared at him fiercely, "Do you have to die in front of me to be satisfied?"
Seeing her angry, Ling Xiaotian put away his smile and whispered, "I'm sorry for making you worry."
"Don't say these useless things," Cheng Yuwei took a deep breath and calmed herself down. "You know, if anything happens to you, I will regret it for the rest of my life."
Her hands moved swiftly, disinfecting, stopping the bleeding, and bandaging the wound in one go. Ling Xiaotian let her work and just watched her quietly.
"Why are you looking at me?" Cheng Yuwei asked in a low voice while wrapping the bandage.
"It's up to you." Ling Xiaotian said softly, "Nothing is more important than your safety."
Cheng Yuwei paused, looked up and glared at him, "Do you think you can get rid of me with a few nice words?"
Ling Xiaotian chuckled, "Then let me say a few more words."
Post-war renovation
Over the next few days, the troops entered a brief period of rest and recuperation. Cheng Yuwei noticed that although the soldiers' expressions appeared somewhat relaxed, she could sense a hint of underlying unease, as if a bigger storm was brewing.
In order to calm everyone's emotions, she took the initiative to participate in logistics work, helped the wounded treat their wounds, and encouraged the soldiers to tell some interesting stories in their daily lives to ease the tense atmosphere.
"Sister-in-law is really our lucky star," a soldier said with a smile, "Every time I see her busy, I feel that we still have hope."
Cheng Yuwei smiled and shook her head. "I can't say I'm a lucky star, but as long as I can make everyone feel a little more relaxed, I'll be satisfied."
夜谈
One evening, Ling Xiaotian returned from headquarters early, a rare occasion. Cheng Yuwei, who was packing her medicine chest, looked up and saw him. She couldn't help but frown and asked, "Can you handle being so busy all day long?"
"Aren't I back to accompany you?" Ling Xiaotian walked over with a smile and sat down beside her.
"Don't be so frivolous." Cheng Yuwei put down the medicine bottle in her hand and looked at him seriously. "Xiaotian, what is our next plan? Although this breakout was successful, I have a feeling the enemy won't give up."
Ling Xiaotian's expression grew serious. "You're right. This breakout is only a temporary victory. The enemy will soon make a move. We must be prepared to move at any time."
"Then..." Cheng Yuwei hesitated, a hint of worry in her tone, "Do we have a chance of winning?"
Ling Xiaotian held her hand and whispered, "As long as you are by my side, I have a chance of winning."
Cheng Yuwei was stunned for a moment, then sighed, "You are always like this, taking everything on yourself."
"Because I want to protect you." Ling Xiaotian said firmly, "The war in this land is my responsibility. You don't have to bear too much."
"But I've already endured it," Cheng Yuwei smiled bitterly, "Have you ever thought about what would happen if one day..."
Ling Xiaotian reached out and gently covered her mouth, interrupting her, "That day will never come."
Looming crisis
However, the peace did not last long. A scout brought back important intelligence: the enemy was rapidly mobilizing its troops and seemed to be preparing to launch a full-scale attack on their base.
"Sir, the enemy is coming in full force this time. Do we need to evacuate on our own initiative?" the adjutant suggested in a low voice.
Ling Xiaotian stared at the map for a long time and said in a deep voice, "We can't retreat any further. If we continue to retreat, the people in this area will have nowhere to escape. We must stop the enemy here."
"But our military strength is limited..." The adjutant hesitated to speak.
"All logistics and non-combat personnel, move to a safer location immediately," Ling Xiaotian ordered decisively. "Deploy defenses on the front lines and buy enough time."
When the news reached Cheng Yuwei, she was sorting supplies with the wounded.
"Sister-in-law, the commander asked you to move with us." A soldier came over and said.
Cheng Yuwei was stunned, "Where is he?"
"The commander must lead the team to stop the enemy."
"Then I'll stay." Cheng Yuwei said without hesitation.
"sister in law……"
"Don't try to persuade me." Cheng Yuwei raised her head, her eyes determined. "He's on the front line. I won't leave."
The soldier was stunned for a moment, and finally nodded, "Then take care of yourself."
After watching them leave, Cheng Yuwei turned and walked towards the command center.
Frontline deployment
Ling Xiaotian was arranging his tactics when he saw Cheng Yuwei push the door open and frowned slightly, "Why haven't you left yet?"
"I won't leave." Cheng Yuwei met his gaze. "Xiaotian, I know you're worried about me, but I've already participated in this war. There's no reason to retreat."
Ling Xiaotian was silent for a moment, and finally gave in. "Then you listen to my instructions and don't act rashly."
Cheng Yuwei nodded, "I promise you."
storm is approaching
As night fell, the enemy camp was brightly lit, obviously preparing for a large-scale attack.
Cheng Yuwei stood on the watchtower, gazing at the distant lights, a complex emotion welling up in her heart. She knew that this battle might determine the fate of many people.
"Are you scared?" Ling Xiaotian walked forward and stood beside her.
"Don't be afraid." Cheng Yuwei turned her head and looked at him, "Because you are here."
Ling Xiaotian curled his lips into a smile, "Okay, then we'll fight side by side.
